Abstract
From time to time, thou it happens rather rarely in life, that we witness some kind of super-natural phenomena occurred within self or performed by someone. Among diverse forms of supernatural manifestations, the well known cases are cognition of an object in a sealed container, premonition(revelation through dream or divinity, intuitions that pop up in a state of deep contemplation and other varied forms of manifestation), knowing intuitively raw spots in body, knowing raw spots in body with highsensorial-perceptive ability, healing by therapeutic souls, healing by therapeutic Qi, remote diagnosis, remote healing, telesthesia or seeing what is known as a ¡®demon¡¯ or a ¡®ghost¡¯.
Commonly, we define a person who possesses such abilities of supernatural powers as a psychic or a person with Extrasensory Perception(ESP). As a scholar and a chairperson of the ¡®Department of Superconsciousness in The Korean Society of Body, Mind, Spirit Science¡¯, I must admit that I have a perspective and a firm conviction that those are not ¡®special¡¯ people with unattainable abilities that ¡®normal¡¯ people can not reach, rather, they are merely people who can reveal and unconceal only a part of abilities that inherently reside or more correctly said, ¡®universally pervading¡¯ in human beings.
If such abilities of diverse supernaturalism is not their own and it is the universally pervading quality in human nature, it triggers a change in the whole attitude in understanding about human being itself. What is human being and what is its capability? Why is it the case that the certain people seem to have special abilities whereas the ordinaries don¡¯t while it must be universally pervading ability? If it is universal, why is it so and how on earth have we been deprived of such knowledge about ourselves?
Out of the researches done on the supernatural abilities disclosed by some high priests or monks there was a particular aspect that attracted the attention. When talking about an evidence or a by-product of spiritual enlightenment or ultimate awakening, Buddhism specifically designates ¡®six supernatural powers(׿ãê÷×)¡¯as a cold proof of being ¡®enlightened¡¯ and the similarity can also be found in Korean traditional religion(à¹Îç) as it points ¡®Four spiritual powers(ÞÌÓÞãêѦ)¡¯ as such. There are relevant comparabilities in the observations of religious disciplinants and ordinary people who exert such powers and in Buddhist culture, such phenomenal events have been well thought over and coordinately organised and defined in words and the similar effort can be found in the field of psychology.
In Buddhism, there is a well defined notion ¡®awareness¡¯ and ¡®awareness before awareness(Awareness that is at play before any kinds of sense-based perceptions kick in)¡¯, and in Philosophy and Psychology, there is a well-known distinction of human perception as Sensory, Higher Sensory and Extra Sensory Perception in order to explain the latent faculties of human beings. One clear conclusion is a fact that in human perception there is a a priori, innate, intuitive and universal awareness that is activated or geared in before sense-based, extrovertively affected cognitions take its position.
And through such awareness of extra-sensorial realm, one comes to the ultimate enlightenment and intuitive living that surpasses a fixated mode of cognition. Awareness of such quality is the only and sole criterion for correcting errors from sensorial mode of perception and through engaging in an act of contemplating(Ù¢ßÌ) or Zen(àÉ), such awareness, which is already-embedded, inborn and innate, can be coordinately disclosed and illumined as it always is. Let us look into this naturally obvious mode of cognition, the Extra-sensory perception, that we have been failing to notice.
